2006: En route and at home
(Warning: sketchbook section may include anatomically correct, or politically incorrect material. Iraq material is based on AP photos.)
I started drawing regularly in 2002. I'd been an exhibited painter for many years, but I felt that my drawing skills were not what they should be, if I wanted to think of myself as a "real" artist.
My early efforts were less than impressive, but I rediscovered the pleasures of having a visual record, however inadequate, of my daily life. I also found, when I came back from a trip, that I got more satisfaction from my sketchbooks than from the many photographs I took along the way, even though I found the business of sketching quite frustrating at the time.
In the six years since, I've become a sort of drawing evangelist, giving presentations to art groups and schools, encouraging people to overcome their embarrassment and participate in one of the most human of activities.
